An effective oral care regimen will go beyond the motions of brushing your teeth. There are actual steps you need to follow to develop an effective oral care regimen that is right for you.

Know Your Oral Health Needs

With no two mouths alike, the only way for you to create an effective oral hygiene regimen is to understand what you need to keep your mouth healthy. To do this you will need the partnership of your Plainview, NY Dentist. Through an exhaustive oral examination by your dentist in Plainview, NY, the actual condition of your oral health is identified. This forms the basis for developing an effective oral care regimen specific to your oral health needs.

Developing and Following Your Oral Care Routine

From the oral examination conducted by your dentist, you can develop an effective oral care regimen that includes the basics and other special considerations that will improve your overall oral hygiene. It is vital that once the regimen is developed that you make sure you follow it daily. Here are some of the basics:

Brushing

  • Done twice a day
  • Spend at least two minutes for the entire mouth
  • Wait 30 minute after consuming acidic food or drinks
  • Clean the surface of your mouth
  • Use soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Use fluoride toothpaste
  • Hold the brush as a 45-degree angle to the gums
  • Use gentle motions to protect the gums
  • Rinse your toothbrush after each use
  • Store your toothbrush in an upright position and air-dry
  • Replace your toothbrush when the bristles are worn-out or at least every three months.

Flossing

  • Use about 18 inches of floss for your entire mouth
  • Wind it around your fingers to guide it around each tooth
  • Concentrate on tight spaces between teeth and under the gum line
  • Be gentle when you guide the floss and create a rubbing motion
  • Make it into a C-shape as you reach the gum line
  • Unwind the floss as you move to the rest of your teeth

Rinsing

  • Use a fluoride or antiseptic mouthwash
  • Allow it to swirl completely around your mouth for 30 to 45 seconds
  • Always rinse after brushing and flossing, or between meals

Dental Visits

Regular dental visits are used not only for checkups but also for cleaning. You will need to go to your Plainview, NY Dentist for each professional cleaning. It is also a great way to stay familiar with the condition of your teeth and mouth. This way, your dentist can spot any potential oral problems, and at the same time, evaluate whether your oral care regimen remains effective for you.
